Location Description:

Katashina is a spacious town in the north of Gunma.

In the summer lots of Japanese tourists visit Katashina for hiking in Oze, over 300 tennis courts, and golf. In the winter, Katashina's 8 ski resorts attract skiiers and snowboarders. There are numerous onsen and ryokan in Katashina.

Things in Katashina:

Oze National Park (尾瀬): Take Rt. 120 from Numata to Katashina. Turn left at Oze bridge. Continue to Oze.
In Katashina, Oze is a beautiful higland marsh that extends into neighboring Tochigi and Fukushima. Visit in early summer to see the mixubasho in bloom or in fall to see the autumn colors. Oze marsh is nestled between two large peaks, Hiuchi and Shibutsu, the latter being the easier of the two to climb. The marsh has a nice wooden pathway builts over it. The marsh was formed by two ancient volcanoes. Osenuma, a large lake, is also a beautiful place to hike, picnic, or stay overnight. Parking at Oze is 500 yen and a bus can be taken into the park.

Hanasaku Onsen (花策の湯): In Katashina on Rt. 64 which travels between Kawaba and Katashina. This onsen is perfect when you are skiing or hiking in the Hotaka region. In April there are 500 carp streamers flown between the onsen and the neighboring hill in honor of Kodomo no Hi, May 5th. There is also a great view of the flower park in the summer.

Skiing:
Katashina has a variety of resorts making it a great place for winter sports. All resorts are well marked and easy to find. Parking is generally 1000 yen.

Ca et La: Follow the signs to this small, but convenient resort. It is a popular resort for snowboarders. They also offer night skiing, which makes it a ust try on weekdays and a good value on the weekend.

Malnuma: This resort is the highest and therefore the coldest. It is also 23 km into Katashina. It is a long, sometimes dangerous drive. The skiing and snowboarding is great, and it is open until May.
