60th Sapporo Snow FestivalSubmitted by Anonymous on Tue, 2008/12/09 - 10:14.
Hey everyone! Just wondering if anyone else was planning on going to Sapporo Yuki Matsuri in February. I signed up with HAJET, and the package they put together is gonna be pretty expensive considering they are planning for a group of 150. Was hoping the experienced people could lend advice on places to look for cheap flights/ferries/trains, or even hotels/hostels. Thanks! |

For hotel reservations, if you can read and type Japanese (or can get someone to help you), I recommend signing up with http://www.jalan.net and booking places through them. My girlfriend and I have used it a lot and you are often able to find simple accommodation for very cheap (ie. normal hotel room with bed and bathroom for less than 5000 yen a night).
If you wanted to get up there on the cheap and have plenty of time, you could always seishun-jyuhachi kippu it up there. Long trip tho!

I'm actually going to the Yuki Matsuri next February. My JET friends in Kyushu found some cheap deals through the Japanese Yahoo! Travel.
I am paying in total of about 52,800yen for 4 nights of accommodation plus breakfast, plus flight from the 11th to the 15th of Feb.
Another good idea is to go up there a week before the actual Matsuri. People do that to avoid the crowds and busy hotel bookings. A friend told me that all the ice sculptures would be put up and illuminated for tests, so it's practically the same thing!
Let me know if you need more help!

Hotels
My friend and I stayed in Asahikawa and got a hotel at the last minute (That will take some time by trains to Sapporo but it's close to the zoo). Every year people who book way in advance cancel. Also some hotels keep rooms open until last minute. By doing an online English search "Sapporo Hotels" we found empty rooms. Your best bet if a hotel is booked online is to call the hotel directly. Sometimes they have openings but don't list them. If you speak/read Japanese definitely look at the Japanese websites. They are more up to date.
ps. We started looking for rooms in mid to late January.
