Bus to Kyoto inquirySubmitted by Iceman10458 on Wed, 2010/03/10 - 19:10.
Hey everybody, If I remember correctly, I was told that there is an overnight bus to Kyoto that leaves from Takasaki. Has anyone taking it, know how much it costs and/if there is a website (preferably in English) where I can buy the tickets? Thanks! Fitz |

I think mine was 8000 yen,
I think mine was 8000 yen, leaving from Fujioka (same bus though, we're just the last stop before starting). I just went to a local travel agency in the grocery store near my house to buy it, or you can buy it at the bus terminal/ticket area in Takasaki station too I think. If you go to a travel agency just go a few days ahead of time. Two fyis: traveling to Osaka is a few sen cheaper if I remember correctly. If you're flexible, take the bus to Osaka and then a train to Kyoto. You should arrive right at the station anyway. And take earplugs; those buses are not very comfortable, and the stopping every two hours got on my nerves, but I guess they're okay for the price. Hope that helps...
A very comprehensive, but Japanese bus site
When I went to kyoto I got on the bus from Tokyo, which is cheaper even if you ad the train fare, and although is may not be faster, you will be probably able to sleep during the night as the buses dwon't stop every 2 hours, and won't keep the lights on like the one from Gunma does.

Silk Liner bus to Kansai
The "Silk Liner" night busses leave the Takasaki station area after 11pm, arrive in the morning. I've taken it, was a good trip. Seating is window, center & window (2 aisles), only 3 seats across the width of the bus. They recline some, have footrests.
Website is only in Japanese, but here it is:
http://www.ncbbus.co.jp/hbus/time2.htm I looked up the info on the website, called to make a reservation, paid for the ticket at my train station (Numata). Don't think anyone at the reservation office spoke English, so get a friend to help if needed. Cost is about Y8,800 oneway from Takasaki to Kyoto. Busses leave from other Gunma locations also, including Maebashi, Shibukawa & Numata.
Nice!
