4th Year ALT and Visa RenewalSubmitted by SubarashiiAnnie on Fri, 2010/05/28 - 11:58.
Hey hey. I'm going on my 4th year of JET and need to get my VISA renewed. I am currently receiving a new passport and after that will get the VISA. I have no idea how to get a new VISA and neither does my supervisor. So JET veterans - could you help a sista out???! I have the official document that states I work for the Prefectural Board of Gunma. I get the sense I am the one that has to take care of all of this and not my contracting organization. Thanks in advance! annie |

Sean's advice really breaks it down step by step and is spot on. Some of his links have since died, but the form link is still active. Be sure to read his follow-up about the different tax forms you need from your local city hall.

Foreigner Card
After you renew your visa, don't forget to renew your foreigner card (which was surprisingly easy at the Takasaki City Office).

Business Trip for Visa Renewel?
One more quick question - I ran out of nenkyu and will have to take a business trip to renew my visa. I think we should get a business trip anyway for this - but my question is did you pay for your trip to Takasaki?
I live quite far (Ota) so it would make a difference in who paid for the transit fees. Has anyone else dealt with this before? My school's pretty strict so I will have to fill out forms and such. Any ideas on how to go about this? Or am I lucky to not have to take nenkyu?
Any insight would be most appreciated!!
Thanks,

Visa Leave
I agree that special leave should be given so that visas can be extended and to get re-entry permits. I can understand schools/BOEs not granting the later, but since we need the visas to work, the former should certainly fall under "work related."
But not all schools/BOEs feel this way and there are many areas that don't grant special leave for going to the immigration office. Asking for the transport fee might be seen as "too much." I doubt they'd cancel your leave, but if the asking is done to strongly it could hurt the chances of the next person trying to take leave. (Of course this is much more likely at a BOE with several ALTs than at a high school with one ALT.)
Still, if you have to fill out paperwork to go to the immigration office, and that paperwork usually comes with a fee form that isn't present, gently asking about it shouldn't hurt. After all, you aren't asking for the trip to be paid for, you're just making sure you filled out all the necessary paperwork.

Visa - Place of Employment?
On the visa renewel form there is a part where we need to fill out "Place of Employment." For HS is that Gunma Prefectural Board of Education or our base school?
Also, if it is Prefectural Board of Education we need to mention the number of foreign employees. Does anyone have that number?
Cheers,
annie

I put my base school as the place of the employment and the BOE as the employer. Got renewed. But you should probably double-check with your supervisor. It's his job to guide you through this process.
